In an exclusive interview to enikos.gr Archbishop Alexios in Gaza talked about the bombing of his Christian Orthodox monastery’s cemetery by the Israelis and the help they give to more than 1000 Palestinian refugees.
Archbishop Alexios told enikos.gr that they have opened the doors of the12thcentury Church of Saint Porphyrios in Gaza, in collaboration with a neighbouring mosque to provide shelter to the Palestinian refugees and their families.
“We offer them water, food, medicines. They came in our church only by wearing their clothes and nothing else,” he said.
Talking about the strike, Archbishop Alexios told enikos that although the Israeli Army had said that churches and mosques would not be targeted the Israelis bombed the monastery’s cemetery and a neighbouring school causing serious damages.
“At the beginning of the Israeli offensive operations, the Israeli army announced that churches and mosques would not be military targets and they could serve as safe shelters for people in Gaza. Unfortunately we had this accident -I don’t know exactly how to call it. Our monastery is close to a Protestant school. Only a wall stands between our cemetery and school. They [Israelis] bombed both the cemetery and the school causing severe damages. Nothing has been left to place –neither graves were spared. All the effects of the bombing were felt in the monastery itself. Windows, doors and roof tiles, water tanks, monastery cars were also destroyed. Thank God we didn’t have any human casualties,” said Father Alexios.
After the hitting, he said, international organizations such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent offered valuable help to the monastery.
The Greek-Orthodox Archbishop said they are in regular contact with the Israeli army, the Greek Patriarchate, the Greek Consulate in Jerusalem and the Greek Ministry for Foreign Affairs
Talking about his mission Alexios said, they support the Christian community in Gaza, living in peace with the Muslims.
“We live together as a family. Both Christians and Muslims we are part of the same nation, we are brothers in blood,” he said.
“We try to provide them medication and spiritual life. Our schools help the children here without any religious discrimination. Everyone can exercise its religious beliefs inside the school. This is the way for people [in Gaza] to coexist and live normal life,” Archbishop Alexios told enikos.gr.
And calling for an end to the suffering of the people he said “Many people are losing their lives and suffer by the war. Stop the war. Start negotiation and with love, find a solution for the future of this people to be free and secure.”
